The Great Leader of Russia

Domestic Affairs

Peter believed that Russia internally needed to be changed. He first started with education. He believed Russia needed a strong army and navy, so he wanted to educate his people to be the best soldiers and commanders they could be. He founded the School of Navigation and Maths to educate the students about navigation and mathematics. He also founded a School of Medicine, and a School of Engineering. The last school he founded was the School of Science. In addition to making reforms in education, he also reformed the economy and the church. To reform the economy, he made the state the dominant force in all forms of the industry. The state was the source of capital, raw materials, and labor. Also, the state was the main purchaser of finished goods. Factories were developed, and colleges were created for mining and commerce. Lastly, Peter wanted to reform the church. Peter wanted to reform the church because of its wealth, it owned vast amounts of land and serfs, and it refused to be modernized. He did this by handing over control of the church to a government department called  Monastyrskii Prikaz. The church made monastic revenue from this, and paid monks a salary.
